The other Microsoft shoe has dropped

Microsoft Silverlight

Earlier I reported on the release of Microsoft’s new Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008, and SQL Server 2008. Now the development side of the equation is announced officially as betas and RCs.

Fedora 8

Fedora 8

It’s one of my favorite times of year software wise; time to start talking about the next version of Fedora. Fedora 8 is the next, much anticipated, version of the Fedora Project. The Fedora 8 Schedule is out and we are nearing the feature freeze already. The Test 1 Development Freeze occurred on July 24th. Here is a good article, from comnetslash.com, about what to expect in both the test release and upcoming releases as well. There is also a good write up about proposed features for Fedora 8, from linuxupdate.blogspot.com.

Longhorn Server

This is going to be a huge launch for Microsoft next year. They are releasing 3 major products at the same time; frankly I can’t wait. Those 3 products make up the best Windows development environment. Throw in Office 2007 and SharePoint 2007 and you’ve got a solid development suite for Windows. Here is ‘Five things to know about Longhorn Server Core‘.

Review: Fedora 7

Fedora 7Fedora 7

It’s been a month or so since the release of Fedora 7. I have installed it and run it daily since then. It’s faster, smoother, and flat out the best linux distribution out there. In the past year I have installed and run numerous linux releases and this is hands down the best, in my opinion. Here are a few reviews from around the interweb:

Review: The Cathedral and the Bazaar

by Eric S. Raymond

During my honeymoon I read The Cathedral and the Bazaar: Musings on Linux and Open Source by an Accidental Revolutionary by Eric S. Raymond. This is an incredible book. If you love open source software, this is the book for you. It has great stories about the open source movement, linux, Mozilla, hackers, and more. I would consider this a must read for everyone who works in the computer industry. Everyone from code monkeys, to managers, to CIOs to CEOs, should read this book.

Anchuan.Org Call For Developers

Unfortunately development at Anchuan.Org has stalled; therefore I am putting out a call for developers. I would like a small group of enthusiastic developers to help re-energize both the firefly project and Anchuan.Org in general. Please email me at timothy.ferro@gmail.com if you wish to help.

Oracle 11g Announced

Oracle 11g

“Oracle was banging its drum hard today, as it launched version 11g of its eponymous Database product.

The vendor may have spent the last three years hovering up other software vendors, but it managed to squeeze in another 36,000 person months to bring its core database platform up to date.

Oracle claims over 400 new features for its new platform. The grid word pops up a lot in the announcement. Perhaps reflecting the other obsessions of the age, Oracle is also emphasizing features such as Data Guard, which it says will increase return on development for disaster recovery, by allowing customers to use their standby database to improve their production environment.” – Source

Firefox 3 Beta Delayed

Firefox 3

“Firefox 3.0′s first beta has been delayed at least six weeks, Mozilla Corp. engineers said Sunday, and it now won’t appear until the middle of September.

In a posting to the mozilla.dev.planning group Sunday, Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla’s vice president of engineering, suggested a revamped milestone schedule for Firefox 3.0, the next major update to the popular open-source browser. Among the changes: a postponement of the first beta, slated as recently as last week to debut July 31. It’s not expected until Sept. 18 at the earliest…” – Source
